Myths in the innovation process

The word innovation has gained considerable importance in recent times and it belongs to the main operating pillars of many companies. 

Despite being so necessary there are still certain myths that can limit the potential of the innovation process, running the risk of staying with good ideas without its execution executed. We would like to share some of them:

  1. One of the most frequent is to think that ideas are born from one moment to another, in a way that nobody can explain. However, studies show that great ideas are created collaboratively and are complemented by existing ideas; in other words, a brilliant idea has gone through a long journey of similar ideas. 
  2. Assume that everyone wants to innovate. It can be considered that many aim for change, but the reality is that not all are willing to change. Much of what makes a successful innovator is his or her ability to persuade and convince people of the potential merits of ideas. This ability is a quite different skill from creativity, and hence the importance of Change Management in an organization.
  3. Thinking that innovating is overly expensive and works only with a great structure. When what really leads to innovation success is complying with your process; beginning with the generation of ideas, followed by the selection of the best ones which should be then implemented, maintained and finally broadly diffused. So the real challenge is relies more on the ability to excel in all parts of this process.

One of the innovation tools that we use in our workshops with which we have had excellent results is Design Thinking. This is a methodology that focuses primarily on the needs of the customer. It is very pragmatic and begins by empathizing with the client through interviews, and based on this exchange, prototypes will be generated to be immediately evaluated with the clients in order to iteratively request feedback.

My PMP certification journey

And suddenly, we find ourselves in a situation where there is no other alternative, we must adapt, reinvent ourselves, take care of ourselves as much as possible, try to use our time in the best way and above all, try to stay calm. 

In this phase, I decided to go for the PMI-PMP certification. 

For those who have not heard yet, PMP (Project Management Professional) is one of the most internationally recognized and multi-industry certifications towards project management. 

This is due to the requirement of having sufficient professional experience in project management, but also extensive knowledge of PM methodology. The difficulty relies on the evaluation based on situational questions, in other words, how would the Project Manager react towards complex but real project circumstances. The truth is that it exceeded my expectations by reviewing many topics that only make sense to review them once you have had the experience of managing projects, dealing with conflicts, delays, failures but also successes in project management. 

During my 11 years of professional career I have had excellent opportunities, being part of all kinds of projects and I can say that this certification is a very good guide for all people who are currently working with conservative projects or agile projects. Having this additional suitcase of knowledge can only bring you forward.

How do we innovate, relying on the operational standards?

All companies have an operating basis that is defined as the foundation of any business model that generates a service or product. 

Depending on the state of the company and stage of growth, this basis must support and adapt at the same time to necessary changes that are required when thinking about innovating. 

Otherwise, Innovation has never lost its value, but today it is much more present and necessary due to factors such as digital transformation, shorter product cycles, more aggressive competition, etc.

Innovation, is it driven more by processes or by people?

A few days ago, I had a pleasant conversation with one of our clients, about the balance between people's creativity and the processes necessary to implement innovation.  

Talent towards creativity is the main engine for constant innovation, and this can be innate or acquired. 

However, an idea without a pragmatic process that considers factors of change within business organizations might run the risk of being left alone as a good idea with no attempt of execution. 

I would like to share with you a good video about Design Thinking . This is an innovation tool that we use in our workshops, with which we have had positive results, thanks to the methodology that focuses on the main actor: the end user of the product or service.

On the other hand, we concluded with our client that both people and processes are necessary for the implementation of new ideas. They must be complementary factors and not of competition.
